VUKOVAR, Oct 5 (Hina) - Students from the second grade of the Fifth
Vukovar Primary School on Monday once again failed to turn up for
classes.
Following an incident last week when Serb students abused children
attending classes in the Croatian language, parents decided to not
send their children to the school until principal Radojka Serbic is
dismissed and police surveillance introduced in school hallways,
deputy principal Jozo Galic said.
However, the school management has not agreed to the introduction
of police surveillance while classes are in progress, Galic said.
"The police have increased patrols around the school and I believe
that this should provide sufficient security for returnee
students," he said.
"Also, as of today, all students who are attending Croatian
language classes are scheduled to attend them at the same time of
day, and are accommodated in classrooms on the same floor in close
proximity to the principal's office and staff room."
He added that the school management had fulfilled several other
demands by parents, but not regarding the dismissal of the
principal which only Education and Sports Minister Bozidar
Pugelnik can do.
A staff meeting is due to be held this afternoon to discuss the
latest incidents at the school.
