SPLIT, Oct 4 (Hina) - Following today's Celebration of the
Eucharist at Znjan, near Split, a little after 1.40 pm Pope John
Paul II departed from the cove towards the centre of Split.
Along the way, the Pope, who travelled in the Popemobile was greeted
along the road to Split by thousands of faithful.
About 2 pm the column arrived in front of the Split Cathedral of the
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The local residents dearly
refer to their cathedral as St. Domnius' cathedral. St. Domnius, a
martyr is buried in the cathedral and is the patron saint of Split.
On the way to the cathedral, the Popemobile halted briefly in front
of the convent of the Sisters of St. Clare, who were allowed by
special approval to come out and greet the Pope. (This order
requires members to take a vow of seclusion).
The Split See awaited Peter's successor in full glory displaying an
exhibition of restored Ferrari paintings depicting scenes from St.
Domnius' life.
