Democratic Party together with Libra and the Liberal Party

instability" in the SDP and that the party is unanimous. #L#
Slavko Linic told a news conference in the southern Adriatic city of
Split that the SDP had been forced to "take steps which were neither
socially sensitive nor compatible with the SDP's programme".
"We must implement European legislation as our objective is the
European Union and we have to do even things which are not in
accordance with the SDP programme," the party official said.
He went on to say that promises which Ivo Sanader and his Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ) had given in the run up to the election were
unrealistic and too big. "The payment of debts in pensions, higher
maternity benefits, better status to war veterans etc., amount to
over nine billion kuna, which it's impossible to ensure," Linic
told the news conference.
He added that the SDP bore great responsibility after the election,
as this party was the only genuine promoter of the left option.
"By accepting the election results we have shown our maturity, and
now we are preparing ourselves for working in the opposition, and in
this position we shall struggle for the completion of our projects.
Care for pensioners, workers and dependants on social welfare
benefits is now our responsibility," Linic said.
Marin Jurjevic, another SDP official who was elected in the
parliament for this slate, said his party would succeed in wrapping
up its projects. Jurjevic said that Sanader "has taken over the role
of Santa Claus and is promising gifts which he will not be able to
give".
