BOURNEMOUTH, Sept 30 (Hina) - Commenting on opposition criticisms,
Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan has said that the Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ) and other opposition parties were trying to
polarise the country and push it into an unnecessary political
conflict. #L#
"I am worried about the obvious intention of the HDZ and parties
supporting it to launch a mudslinging campaign, raise tensions,
criticise without providing arguments, and make imputations about
political opponents," Racan said when asked to comment on some
opposition leaders' criticisms saying that during his visit to
Great Britain "Racan did not behave as a statesman".
Leaders of the HDZ, the Social Liberals, the Democratic Centre and
the Croatian Party of Rights condemned Racan in parliament today
for a statement he gave to the press in London on Monday.
"Perhaps our government will suffer criticism or punishment, so we
will have to face a government that will not have a democratic view
that justice should be done," Racan said in response to a
journalist's question regarding the case of fugitive Croatian Army
general Ante Gotovina.
"The HDZ has only been faking to have undergone reform and is now
showing its old face, identifying itself with the nation and state
and vilifying political opponents," Racan said.
He added that Croatia should demonstrate disagreement with
attempts to polarise the society and cause unnecessary political
conflicts which he said had marked Croatia for a number of years,
keeping it isolated from Europe and the rest of the world.
