The promotion will take place on October 21, which marks the 25th
anniversary of John Paul's pontificate.
Bozanic is the sixth cardinal in the history of the Zagreb
Archbishopric. He was born in Rijeka in 1949 and was appointed
Archbishop of Zagreb and president of the Croatian Bishops'
Conference in 1997.
Bozanic was congratulated on his promotion by President Stjepan
Mesic, Parliament President Zlatko Tomcic, and Prime Minister
Ivica Racan, who stressed in their notes that the appointment also
constituted the Holy Father's acknowledgement of the entire
Croatian people and the Catholic Church in Croatia.
