central Adriatic city of Sibenik on Friday and spread through the Krka National Park to the Skradin area was contained at 0600 hours on Sunday, regional fire officials said. About 200 professional firefighters and a large number of local residents took part in extinguishing the blaze, which consumed 600 hectares of pinewood, underbrush, vineyards and olive groves. About 30 firefighters are still battling another major fire that has been burning between the nearby coastal towns of Vodice and Tribunj over the past two days. Around 75 hectares of underbrush and agricultural crops have burnt. According to the fire officials, 22 fires have broken out in Sibenik-Knin County in the last two days, consuming more than 1,000 hectares of pine forest, underbrush and crops.
