The school is located in Amruseva Street in downtown Zagreb and so
far 15 pupils have enrolled at it.
The first private, open Jewish primary school bears the name of
Lauder Lea Deutsch, a child actor from Zagreb, who died in May 1943
at the age of 16 on a train bound for the Auschwitz concentration
camp.
Lea Deutsch, her mother Ivka, and brother Sasa were taken away by
the Gestapo.
The proposal to open the first Jewish primary school was put forward
a year ago by the parents of children attending a day-care centre at
the Zagreb Jewish Municipality.
Children with non-Jewish religious background, as well as children
whose parents are atheists will also be able to enrol.
All subjects will be taught by two teachers, except for a group of
subjects containing the Hebrew language, Jewish culture and
history, and Jewish religion as an optional subject, which will be
taught by teachers hired by the Zagreb Jewish Municipality.
The curriculum for the latter group of subjects is called Tal AM and
was drawn up in Canada.
