He added that other military exercises involving Croatia's armed
forces had been organised in such a way that they would not affect
everyday life of civilians.
Gareljic made the statement during a parliamentary debate on a bill
to confirm an agreement between Croatia and the USA concerning co-
operation in the field of preventing the spreading of weapons for
mass destruction as well as promoting defence and military
relations.
The agreement was supported by the Istrian Democratic Assembly
(IDS) while of the other parliamentary benches only the Croatian
Party of Rights (HSP) participated in the debate.
MP Vlado Jukic of the HSP fiercely opposed the agreement because he
believed that it puts Croatia in a subordinate position, i.e. under
the protectorate of the USA.
Gareljic replied to each of Jukic's objections, rejecting the
possibility of a US military base being built on the island of Vis.
Gareljic added that the agreement makes no mention of the
construction of a US military base in Croatia.
