ZAGREB, May 30 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament President Zlatko Tomcic
on Friday opened a special parliament session, held on the occasion
of Sabor Day, May 30, the day when the first multiparty parliament
in Croatia was constituted 13 years ago. #L#
Addressing the gathered, Tomcic said the Sabor was proud of its role
in the past decade, adding that it faced equally challenging tasks -
membership in the European Union and NATO - in the coming period.
In the coming period, the parliament will complete reforms which
are directly related to our international position and integration
goals, Tomcic said.
Recalling May 30, 1990, Tomcic said that "that day, without any
doubt, was the a historic watershed in Croatia's history".
In the collective memory of our people, that day symbolises the
beginning of realisation of our main goals, he added.
The parliament was also addressed by Vice-President Mato Arlovic,
who said that most parliamentary tasks since 2000 had been in the
function of fulfilling international obligations so Croatia could
become part of Euro-Atlantic associations.
MPs owe the fulfilment of these duties to Croatian citizens, so they
could live in a modern, democratic and free state, he said.
The current composition of the parliament has so far adopted 504
legal documents, of which 151 refer to the ratification of
international bilateral and multilateral agreements. In the coming
period, the Sabor will discuss some 50 laws, Arlovic said.
He recalled the results of the coalition government and
parliamentary majority, adding that the Sabor had had an important
role in the implementation of reforms.
"Although the fierceness of parliamentary discussions may
sometimes leave the impression of true animosity between parties,
those are always discussions of political opponents, not enemies,
which is proven by the fact that every other law is adopted
unanimously," Arlovic said.
Attending the session, along with parliamentary deputies, was
President Stjepan Mesic, Prime Minister Ivica Racan and other
senior state officials, church dignitaries, representatives of
religious communities and the diplomatic corps and other public
figures.
