Svetozar Marovic, will invite Pope John Paul II to visit Serbia and Montenegro
in his capacity as head of state, Marovic's office said in a statement on
Wednesday.The statement said that Marovic was confident that the invitation would
contribute to the affirmation of the European spirit of tolerance, the
strengthening of Christian values, ecumenism and multiethnicity, not only in
Serbia and Montenegro but in entire Southeast Europe.
Representatives of the Serb Orthodox Church have on several occasions
expressed a negative opinion about the Holy Father's possible visit to Serbia
and Montenegro.
