ZAGREB, May 10 (Hina) - Zagreb County Court Investigating Judge
Kresimir Devcic on Monday rejected a request by the Office for the
Prevention of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) to initiate an
investigation and remand Mate Granic and Darinko Bago in custody for a
month.#L#
Granic, former foreign minister and honorary president of the
Democratic Centre (DC) party, and Bago, chief executive officer of
Koncar Electrical Industries Inc., were suspected of bribery.
Judge Devcic decided there were not enough grounds to order an
investigation despite the existence of circumstantial evidence
indicating that a criminal act had been committed.
Granic and Bago are expected to be released later in the day from
Zagreb's Remetinec Prison where they have been detained since Friday
evening.
The decision was rendered after the two suspects presented their
defence before the investigating judge.
USKOK has the right to appeal against the decision.
