WASHINGTON, April 24 (Hina) - The percentage of people living in
extreme poverty in Croatia in 2000 was below two percent, the World
Bank said in a report on Friday.#L#
The report, called World Development Indicators 2004, says that
between 1981 and 2001 the number of extremely poor people, living on a
dollar per day, was halved from 40 percent to 21 percent of the world
population.
High unemployment rates in Eastern Europe and Central Asia and
decreased production in many former communist countries has led to an
increase in the percentage of the extremely poor from close to zero in
1981 to six percent in 1999, however, the rate has been on decline for
the last several years, the report reads.
As regards Croatia, the World Bank only possessed data for 2000 and
according to them, less than two percent of the country's population
lived on less than a dollar per day in 2000. Less than two percent of
the population lived on less than two dollars per day.
Between 1990 and 2002, 20 percent of the poorest Croatians accounted
for 8.3 percent of GDP. At the same time, 20 percent of the wealthiest
Croatians accounted for 39.6 percent of GDP.
