ZAGREB, April 21 (Hina) - Nacional weekly on Wednesday issued a
statement responding to a statement which the government issued
earlier in the day claiming that an article about the possibility of
"Croatia being directly threatened by the activities of Al Qaeda and
other terrorist networks", published in a weekly, was based on
"arbitrary interpretations which unnecessarily cause public anxiety".#L#
The weekly's editorial board said in the statement that the topic of
the article "is neither arbitrarily interpreted nor is it speculation"
and added that Nacional had strong arguments to support its claims.
The latest issue of Nacional included an article headlined "CIA: Al
Qaeda Wants to Use Croatia Airlines Planes to Attack Heathrow" in
which it is claimed that a CIA report from 2003 speaks about the
threat of Osama bin Laden's terrorist network hijacking Croatian
planes to attack London's Heathrow airport. The weekly also claims
that the target of new terrorist attacks could be some foreign
embassies in Zagreb, such as those of Spain, Poland and Italy. The
weekly further states that Croatia could be put on a list of countries
indirectly financing international terrorism.
To support this claim, the weekly quotes an international expert as
claiming that one of the alleged co-owners of the "Koncar" company is
linked to the financing of terrorists.
