BELGRADE, April 13 (Hina) - The Serbian government is expected on
Thursday to discuss a draft decree defining conditions for state
assistance to indictees of the UN war crimes tribunal and their
families, Serbian Finance Minister Mladjan Dinkic said in an interview
with Tuesday's issue of Vecernje Novosti daily.#L#
Only indictees of poorer financial status will be entitled to state
assistance, Dinkic said.
To be awarded the assistance, the indictees will have to provide data
on ownership of movable and immovable property, savings deposits and
cash in the country and abroad, company or bank shares and membership
in management or supervisory boards. The credibility of the data will
be checked by tax bodies.
Dinkic said that only few among the indictees would be entitled to any
assistance as the value of their property "exceeds by far the limit
envisaged by the decree".
"Most Hague tribunal indictees, especially Slobodan Milosevic,
Vojislav Seselj or Milan Milutinovic are known to have property whose
value by far exceeds the limit set by the decree. If that right is
eventually granted to anyone, that will be the indictees and families
who are in a really grave financial situation", Dinkic said.
The Serbian parliament on March 30 passed a law envisaging state
assistance for the defence of Hague tribunal indictees as well as
their families.
The law has been criticised by many non-governmental organisations and
individuals. A petition is being signed for the parliament to annul
the law. The Committee of Human Rights Attorneys and the Democratic
Party have asked the Serbian Constitutional Court to review the
constitutionality of the law.
