The reconstruction began in a block of Serb-owned flats in Pristina's
Ulpiana neighbourhood that was burnt and damaged on the night of March
17. The apartment complex was built in the 1990s as part of a
programme of the Belgrade government to accommodate Serb refugees from
Croatia.
Welcoming the start of the reconstruction works, Kosovo premier Bajram
Rexhepi said the reconstruction of the apartment complex would cost
75,000 euros and that it would be completed in 10 days. He called the
destruction of the apartments vandalism
The Kosovo government has decided to set up a special fund of EUR5
million to repair buildings damaged in the violence. A special task
force led by Culture Minister Behxhet Brajshori was established to
coordinate the project.
Brajshori has contacted UNESCO and the Council of Europe about the
project, and the two organisations are expected to send their experts
to assess the damage to cultural monuments, particularly monasteries
and churches.
