ZAGREB, March 2 (Hina) - Five trade unions of employees of the Croatian
Railways (HZ) on Tuesday sent an open letter to Prime Minister Ivo
Sanader following statements by government officials about a project
of modernisation of the HZ, which the unionists described as
contradictory.#L#
The unionists wanted to know whether the streamlining of the HZ was
part of the project of Croatia's integration into the European Union
and what would be the consequences of a slower pace of modernisation
of the company for the process of EU integration in light of
integration deadlines.
"We support the continuation of envisaged projects which guarantee
safe and secure travelling by train along the entire network of HZ
railways, as well as of the survival of the Croatian Railways within
the EU," the unions wrote in the letter.
Only a modernised HZ can be competitive, they said adding that the
modernisation of the HZ could not be questioned if there was political
will for it.
