Jovan Curcic, 49, was sentenced to 14 years in prison; Milos Drzajic, 36, to 10 years; Mladen Maksimovic, 37, to seven years; and Dusan Misic, 41, Dragan Savic, 35, and Jovica Vucenovic, 46, to six years in prison each. They have the right to appeal.
The sentencing hearing was attended by Curcic, Drzajic and Misic, who have been remanded in the Osijek District Prison since 13 March 2003. The other three accused were tried in absence.
Reading the judgement, Judge Ante Zeljo said that the trial proved that from 1 August until 13 September 1991 the six men imprisoned and physically abused Croatian military and civilian prisoners and used them as forced labour, and ordered and carried out unauthorised searches of houses. One of the prisoners died as a result of maltreatment.
The men were already tried by the same court in 2004, but the Supreme Court annulled the sentences "for procedural reasons" and ordered a re-trial, which started on 30 March 2005.
