In a statement to Croatian Radio on Sunday, Mesic said the general would receive the right kind of support if the Hague tribunal could establish the truth, which he said would be possible if it obtained all the relevant facts.
"We are interested in justice and in that sense Croatia should help the general - not with loud messages but with competence and know-how," Mesic said.
Commenting on today's rallies of support for Gotovina, Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks said the position of the authorities was that rallies should be in the service of supporting Croatia, General Gotovina and the truth.
"Rallies should serve the truth and motivate all to join efforts to prevent attempts to revise Croatia's history and help the government engage its best experts, legal and others, in contesting the indictment that is based on unacceptable allegations."
"That is the purpose and aim of these rallies, which should be peaceful and dignified," Seks said.
