The Municipal Council, the majority of which is comprised of members of the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Muslim Party of Democratic Action, recently adopted the decision under which the Marko Marulic elementary school, which was attended by Croat and Muslim children, was divided into two schools. The new school is called Alija Isakovic and is intended for Muslim children alone.
The decision was criticised by international officials in Bosnia and representatives of opposition political parties.
Those against the establishment of ethnically divided schools say this foments new ethnic divisions in the country, while those in favour say such schools contribute to the preservation of the national, cultural and linguistic diversities in Bosnia.
