Mesic said that Croatia's two main strategic goals were admission to the European Union and NATO, and that efforts were being made in many areas to achieve them, the president's office said in a press release.
Mesic also said that combating terrorism called for active measures as well as for combating its causes, adding that Croatia wanted to contribute to the fight by joining the EU and NATO.
Before meeting Mesic, General Jones met officials of the Croatian Defence Ministry headed by Minister Berislav Roncevic and the military chief of staff, General Josip Lucic.
General Jones expressed satisfaction with the progress Croatia made over the past 10 years, the ministry said in a statement.
Speaking of Croatia's admission to NATO, Jones underlined the need for Croatia to cooperate with the Hague war crimes tribunal. He also called on Croatia to take part in the anti-terrorism activities NATO is carrying out in the Mediterranean, primarily by monitoring maritime transport.
