The Serb People's Party (SNS) on Sunday called on Montenegrin officials to say how they would ensure funds for the war damages which Croatia claimed. The SNS party fears that Montenegro will face an economic collapse if it decides to pay damage to Zagreb.
The spokesman for this party, Jovan Vucurovic, was quoted by the MINA news agency as saying that "the plan is that Montenegro should pay some alleged war damages, and, in return, Croatia would lobby for its independence". Describing this plan as mean he said that "it will not work out as the issue of war damage compensation is a serious thing".
The Democratic Serb Party (DSS) also criticised Mesic's visit to Podgorica, labelling it as an act of support to Montenegro's plans to hold a referendum on its independence
President Mesic met his Montenegrin counterpart Vujanovic in Podgorica last Friday for talks on bilateral and regional cooperation. Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, the two presidents reaffirmed their readiness to continue intensive cooperation and said that an agreement had been reached under which Croatia would be partly compensated for the war damage caused by Montenegrin forces during the 1991-1995 war.
The agreement was reached for compensation of a portion of the war damage in Konavle and Dubrovnik's Cilipi airport. Vujanovic confirmed that Montenegro would pay the agreed compensation over the next month or two.
