ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - The Organisation for Security and
Cooperation in Europe Mission and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Office
in Croatia on Friday welcomed the government's decision to extend the deadline
for the submission of housing applications by former tenancy rights owners who
lived in social flats prior to the 1990s war. The deadline has been
extended until September 30, while there is no deadline for the submission of
housing applications by refugees from previously war-stricken areas.
The head of the OSCE Mission, Ambassador Jorge Fuentes, said the former
tenancy rights holders were the most important remaining category of refugees
without a housing option in Croatia.
Fuentes said that although the deadline extension was welcomed, the
next three months should be used to carry out this housing programme so that
other former tenancy rights holders who wished to return could be encouraged to
apply for housing.
