The investigation into the former cook began today with the interrogation of the first witness at the Zagreb County Court. The man, identified as M.B., is suspected of sexually molesting the wards at the Brezovica home and raping a mentally retarded woman working in the home's kitchen, about which he kept a diary.
It has been speculated that the wards were also molested by a French citizen who volunteered at the home, where he allegedly also dealt drugs. He is assumed to have come to the Brezovica home in 2000 after being charged in France with sexually abusing two daughters, a son and a grandson.
County prosecutor Visnja Loncar declined to comment on the case saying it was confidential. Senior Zagreb police official Krunoslav Borovec said the police were instructed by the State Prosecutor's Office in January that all cases pertaining to the legal protection of children and minors must be confidential.
