BELGRADE, June 17 (Hina) - The former head of the Serbian Government's Information Office, Vladimir Popovic, has said that the former chief of the Interior Ministry's State Security Service, Jovica Stanisic, told him that Serbian Radical Party (SRS) vice-president Tomislav Nikolic personally had killed a number of civilians in the eastern Croatian village of Antin in 1991.

Popovic said this a few months ago in an interview with B92 Television, but that part of the interview was broadcast for the first time on Thursday evening.

One evening in 1991, during a visit to an SRS volunteer detachment in the village of Antin, Nikolic had a few drinks and wanted to show that he is a real Serb. He took a Kalashnikov assault rifle and personally shot dead between 10 and 15 old men and women and threw them into a pool, Popovic quoted Stanisic as saying.

He added that Radovan Stojicic, also known as Badza, who at that time was a senior official in the Serbian Ministry of the Interior, was so angered by what had happened that he immediately demanded that the police send Nikolic and other SRS volunteers back to Serbia.

A few days ago the director of the Belgrade-based Humanitarian Law Fund, Natasa Kandic, was the first to accuse the second highest ranking SRS official of involvement in the war crimes committed in the village of Antin.

Nikolic refuted all the accusations, insisting that no crimes had been committed in Antin while he was there. He said he went to the village as a volunteer in December 1991, and according to Natasa Kandic, the crimes were committed in early November of that year.
