He met with President Stjepan Mesic on the fringes of a Southeast European summit for talks on Croatia's intensified efforts to meet political criteria required for European Union entry negotiations.
Speaking of European prospects of the countries in the region, Rehn ranked Croatia alongside Turkey, saying that negotiations with them would be opened as soon as they met the remaining conditions.
He voiced hope Croatia would confirm full cooperation with the Hague tribunal so that the negotiations could be opened.
Rehn said that thanks to the Serbian government's efforts, negotiations on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement had begun, and voiced hope they would be launched with Bosnia-Herzegovina soon.
He said the EU advocated a sustainable status for Kosovo which would ensure the rule of law and protect ethnic minorities' rights.
