ZAGREB, May 2 (Hina) - Equatorial Guinea opposition leader in exile Severe Moto returned to Spain on Saturday to dispel fears that he had been killed, more than seven days after his wife reported him missing, world media said on Monday.

Moto told a press conference in Madrid he had left his home in Spain for Croatia, where he was nearly killed on a yacht.

He accused Equatorial Guinea and Spain of conspiracy to kill him, which both countries dismissed.

Moto is accused of involvement in an attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea last year. Two years ago he set up a self-styled government in exile in Madrid, where he has lived since the mid-1980s.

Moto said he became a target because Spain wanted good relations with Equatorial Guinea, its former colony, because of oil.

He told reporters he had felt weak and unprotected in Spain, so he went to Croatia in order to raise money for his political activity, according to the BBC.

Reuters said that in Croatia Moto had allegedly been taken aboard a yacht by people who were planning to kill him. He said the killers changed their mind and became his angels.

Moto maintains he was spared because the Croats did not want to kill a Catholic.

He requested an official investigation of Spain, but said he had no proof of Spain's involvement in the alleged conspiracy to kill him.

Croatian Interior Ministry spokesman Zlatko Mehun told Hina on April 22 that Moto stayed in Zagreb in the night between March 19 and 20.

Equatorial Guinea sentenced him in absence to 62 years' imprisonment for involvement in an attempted coup. At the time, he claimed he knew nothing about the coup plan, although he said it would be completely legitimate to remove President Theodor Obiang by force.
