Parliamentarians comment on President Josipovic's first year in office

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, Feb 18 (Hina) - Commenting on Croatian President Ivo Josipovic's first year in office, representatives of parliamentary opposition parties on Friday praised him as an excellent statesman, while parties in the ruling coalition agreed that he had performed his duties well in the last 12 months but that they had expected more of him in efforts to reach solutions with Serbia which would prevent the occurrence of cases such as the arrest of Croatian national Tihomir Purda in Bosnia on a warrant issued by Serbia.

Commenting on the first year since Josipovic's inauguration, Croatian People's Party (HNS) parliamentarian Vesna Pusic said that Croatia had elected "a good president who is a herald of new times".

I think that he has identified Croatia's potentials in the new period and a role which Croatia can play in the region, Pusic said, adding that he had recognised Croatia's role as a stabilising factor and took on an initiative.

Asked whether Josipovic had preserved neutrality, Pusic praised Josipovic for pursuing a nonpartisan policy.

Parliamentarians from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), of which Josipovic was a member before his election, joined in his praises.

Igor Dragovan of the SDP said that Josipovic had succeeded in ensuring Croatia's role as regional leader, and added that he had also introduced new democratic standards in performing public duties.

Asked by reporters whether the President's economic advisory council could have achieved more, Dragovan said that it was the government that should give solutions for the economy and that it was up to the president to warn about what was not good.

Andrija Hebrang of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) said that it was "very complex" to appraise the first year of Josipovic's term in office.

Hebrang welcomed the president's "civilised level of behaviour" and his manners.

The HDZ parliamentarian, however, criticised the Croatian president over insufficient engagement in travelling westward, adding that he travelled more to the east although "this is a period when we want to go to Europe and not to the Balkans".

He said that Josipovic had failed to solve some problems with Serbia such as war veterans' issues, notably indictments "based on confessions exhorted by beatings in Serbian camps", and border demarcation.

Asked about the nonpartisan role of the head of state, Hebrang said that Josipovic's neutrality would undergo a test this year, the current government's last year in office.

Josip Friscic of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) said that he would give neither negative nor brilliant marks to Josipovic.

According to Friscic, Josipovic's activities in foreign affairs and in Croatia's European Union membership bid deserve a positive grade.

However, Friscic believes that Josipovic's bilateral contacts with Serbian officials gave no results, as evidenced by the case of war veteran Tihomir Purda.

He said he disliked Josipovic's everyday criticism of the government's work.
