"There is no trace of Moto ever staying in Croatia. No one has reported to us that he has disappeared nor has Interpol requested from its Croatian office any information about the African politician," Mehun said.
According to reports by Spanish newspapers El Pais and El Mundo, Moto travelled to Croatia twice in March, last time on March 19, after which he disappeared. Spanish authorities fear that he has been killed.
Moto escaped to Spain late last year following a failed coup on President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. Thirteen people were convicted of conspiracy to kill Obiang. Moto claimed he knew nothing of the planned coupe, but made it clear that it would be legitimate to remove Obiang from power by force.
Equatorial Guinea, a former Spanish colony, is the third largest oil producer in Africa. Obiang came to power in a coup in 1979.
