PRISTINA, April 15 (Hina) - Enver Haradinaj, brother of ex-Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, who is in detention of the Hague war crimes tribunal, was killed in a drive-by shooting in the vicinity of Pec on Friday.

This news was confirmed by the chief of the regional hospital and the police in Pec.

Kosovo police and the district prosecutor went to the scene to investigate the incident which occurred on the Pec-Decani road. The road was closed off, as was the Pec hospital, where the 25-year-old Haradinaj was brought after the shooting. He died in hospital.

The murder disturbed the residents of Pec as well as of the entire Kosovo because Haradinaj had been a prominent member of the ex-Kosovo Liberation Army who had been wounded a number of times during the conflict in Kosovo and was a disabled war veteran.

The police have not issued an official statement on the motives of the murder or possible suspects.

Senior officials of the UN Mission in Kosovo and the NATO-led Kosovo Force most vehemently condemned the murder, and called on citizens to show restraint and help the police shed light on the incident and apprehend the suspects.

President Ibrahim Rugova slammed the murder too, as did the Kosovo Protection Corps, and all ethnic Albanian political parties.

The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, whose leader is ex-PM Haradinaj, maintains the assassination was politically motivated.
