Fischer met Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova, with whom he discussed the situation in the province and the implementation of standards set by the international community as a precondition for opening talks on Kosovo's status.
Defining Kosovo's political status requires an international consensus. Kosovo must meet international standards if it wants to draw closer to Europe, Fischer said, noting that priority tasks were the rule of law and the status of national minorities.
Fischer, whose country is a member of the Contact Group for Kosovo, also met Kosovo Prime Minister Bajram Kosumi and other Albanian and Serb representatives.
The German official arrived in Kosovo from Tirana.
He started his visit by meeting German soldiers in the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR). He also met Deputy Civil Administrator for Kosovo Larry Rossin and the KFOR commander, General Yves de Kermabon of France.
