Teachers' trade unions believe that the education system cannot be changed appropriately if teachers are not motivated for work.

The main problem of teachers in Croatia is their poor status and low salaries.

For the first time this year teachers' salaries dropped below the national average and this trend seems to have continued.

According to the State Bureau of Statistics, the average salary in the school system this year amounted to 4,535 kuna (EUR616), which is 105 kuna below the national average.

On the occasion of World Teachers Day, the declaration on the status of teachers by Education International, the world organisation of teachers, will be read out in staff rooms in Croatian schools and the text of the declaration will be posted on school information boards.

Education International gathers more than 29 million teachers and other education workers from 161 countries.
