A decision on the candidacy is expected to be made at the 50th general assembly of the US agency, to be held in Vienna on 18-22 September.
The IAEA Board of Governors consists of 35 of the 140 IAEA member-countries and is important for defining the Agency's activities and giving recommendations on numerous aspects of its work. The body is elected every two years.
Croatia became an IAEA member in 1993.
The IAEA, which is headed by Mohamed ElBaradei, controls and supervises the peace-time use of nuclear science and technology and fights the abuse and illegal trade in nuclear and radioactive material.
