LJUBLJANA, Sept 1 (Hina) - Croatia's Environmental Protection, Zoning and Construction Minister Marina Matulovic Dropulic and the State Secretary at the Croatian Foreign Ministry, Hido Biscevic, on Friday visited the Slovene municipality of Lendava and met with the State Secretary at the Slovene Foreign Ministry, Bozo Cerar, and local officials to discuss the current dispute on the River Mura, Slovene Radio reported on Friday afternoon.

Lendava municipality includes the village of Hotiza whose residents earlier this week requested Prime Minister Janez Jansa to make Croatia stop works on a dyke on the River Mura, claiming that the works were being carried out in the area covered by Croatian cadastral books, but on land plots that were owned by Slovenes. A correspondent for Slovene Radio said reporters spotted the two officials by accident, but they gave no statements for the press after the meeting.

Slovene Radio also reported that Hotiza residents were launching a campaign to collect information on the owners of the land plots on which preparations for construction works were being carried out to reinforce the dyke on the Mura and their number.

Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel told Slovene Television that Slovenia admitted that works were being carried out in the area which was in Croatian cadastral books, but that the area had been controlled by Slovenia on 25 June 1991, at the time when the two countries declared independence.

Slovene media reported that by building the dyke Croatia was violating the agreement not to take unilateral action on the border which has not been defined yet.
