Mesic was visiting Pozega, about 150 kilometres east of Zagreb, where he was asked by reporters to comment on relations with Slovenia in the light of the latest developments regarding the construction of a dyke on the left bank of the Mura river.
"I'm sorry we haven't settled the basic problems with Slovenia. It always happens that either country is in the election year and we have never brought these matters to a close," Mesic said.
"We mostly have good cooperation with Slovenia, although we have open issues regarding the Bay of Piran, the Ljubljanska Banka debt, Sveta Gera and the border," the President said, noting that the open issues should be addressed one by one.
"The attempt by (the then prime ministers of Croatia and Slovenia) Racan and Drnovsek to resolve all the issues at once, failed and there's no point in returning to that attempt because it has no legal effect," he added.
"Both experts and the governments should again sit at the negotiating table in order to find solutions. Wherever they are unable to find them they should go to the International Court of Justice in The Hague for a verdict," Mesic said, stressing that "there is no such issue that cannot be solved if there is good will."
