ZAGREB, June 19 (Hina) - The Croatian Journalists Association
(HND) on Monday urged police protection for the editor-in-chief and reporter of
the German edition of the "Vecernji List" daily, Stipe Pudja, who received
death threats after discovering a swindle, its victims being Croatian nationals
living in Germany who wanted to buy tickets for the World Cup football
championship matches. The HND voiced hope that Pudja's articles
would help shed light on the scandal.
Zagreb Police Department spokeswoman Aleksandra Ljuba confirmed for
Hina today that police started an investigation after Pudja reported Kresimir
Kraljevic for threatening to kill him.
In an article on June 11 Pudja said that some people had swindled money
out of at least 1,000 Croatians living abroad for tickets to football matches
by introducing themselves as members of the Croatian Football Federation. They
never provided the tickets.
One of the victims of the scam who was interviewed pointed the finger
at Kresimir Kraljevic, saying that Kraljevic had introduced himself as an
employee of the Croatian Football Federation and that he had given him money
for the tickets, but never got them.
