ZAGREB, June 13 (Hina) - Zagreb County Court investigating judge Zdenko Posavec launched an investigation on Tuesday against Branimir Glavas and Krunoslav Fehir for their roles in war crimes against civilians committed in the eastern city of Osijek in 1991.

The investigation was launched at the request of the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office following interviews with the two subjects over the last two weeks.

In two interviews with the investigating judge, independent member of Parliament Glavas rejected all the allegations of ill-treatment of three Serb civilians and murder of two. He also dismissed the charge that at the start of the war he had his own paramilitary forces in Osijek.

Fehir, a former member of the battalion that was under Glavas's command in 1991, is suspected of physically abusing and shooting a civilian prisoner. He confessed to the crime, saying that Glavas had given him the order to do it.

Glavas dismissed Fehir's accusation, calling him a liar and a mental case.

Earlier in the day, when asked by reporters during his visit to the eastern town of Nasice to comment on the possible opening of an investigation into the two suspects, Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks declined to comment, saying that the decision was up to the judicial authorities and that politicians "will not and must not interfere."
