ZAGREB, May 12 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Friday
extended condolences to his Nigerian counterpart Olusegun Obasanjo on the
death of about 200 people in the blast of an oil pipeline on the outskirts of
Nigeria's biggest city, Lagos. President Mesic sent a letter of
condolence on his and the Croatian people's behalf.
According to the Reuters news agency, the pipeline explosion killed up
to 200 people on the outskirts of Lagos on Friday, leaving charred corpses on a
sandy beach where locals went to tap into the pipe to steal fuel.
The Red Cross said the pipeline blew up while thieves were drilling
into it, igniting about 500 nearby jerrycans full of fuel.
