A Croatian court issued an international arrest warrant for Savic on 22 May 2003, said Dominique Reyniers, a spokeswoman for the Prosecutor's Office in Antwerp where Savic was arrested on Wednesday evening during a routine police check.
Croatian Interior Ministry spokesman Zlatko Mehun told Hina that Interpol had confirmed the arrest of Savic and that his identity was being verified. Mehun added that Savic was sought by the County Court in Karlovac.
AFP quoted an article run by the Zagreb newspaper Vecernji List in October 2000 as saying that Savic was on a list of some 40 Croatian Serbs wanted for war crimes committed in the Slunj area, about 100 kilometres south of Zagreb, between 1991 and 1995.
