ZAGREB, April 5 (Hina) - The doors to the European Union must be open to the countries of Southeast Europe and Europe's unification cannot be completed until all those countries gradually join the bloc, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said at the opening of the second Crans Montana Forum in Zagreb on Wednesday.

Sanader, however, said there were political problems that needed to be solved first, such as the issue of Kosovo, the referendum in Montenegro and constitutional reforms in Bosnia-Herzegovina, namely three most important political issues on the agenda of the international community.

"Croatia firmly opts to be part of the solution, part of the EU policy, which is why the country will not carry out a unilateral policy towards its neighbourhood. We can contribute to the process of finding a solution ... we are ready to do that and we will do it," Sanader.

He expressed satisfaction with the fact that political leaders from EU and countries aspiring to strengthen their ties with the bloc were attending the Crans Montana Forum in Zagreb, adding that this was the way to connect European bridges.

The topic of the Crans Montana Forum in Zagreb - Croatia: Europe's Gateway to the Southeast - underlines Croatia's role which can be a bridge or door of the European Union towards the Southeast.

Sanader recalled last year's Crans Montana Forum in Zagreb, held shortly after the bloc postponed Croatia's EU entry talks over insufficient cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal. He said that the events that followed proved the Croatian Government's credibility.

"Now we started the membership talks and they are proceeding fine. We are very ambitious and we want to conduct quality and speedy negotiations," Sanader said.

"We in Croatia have achieved a national consensus regarding joining the European Union. There is political rivalry, as is the case in all countries, but it does not bring into question our joint efforts invested in reforming Croatia on its path to the EU," Sanader said.

The chairman and founder of Crans Montana Forum, Jean Paul Carteron, said Croatia was moving forward on the path to the EU, adding that the country enjoyed full support and that the forum in Zagreb would help Croatia on that path.
