ROME, March 31 (Hina) - Croatia could become a full member of the European Union regardless of the Nice Treaty, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said in Rome on Friday, where he was attending a convention of the European People's Party, the strongest political group in the European Parliament.

"Although there are interpretations according to which Nice is a problem for Croatia, we have also studied it within the European People's Party and seen that the basic EU documents allow for this possibility (for Croatia to be admitted to the EU)," Sanader told Croatian reporters covering his visit to Rome.

"It can be done in the form of an amendment when the (accession) talks are over, or in some other way, but the possibility exists," he added.

Sanader said that Croatia would not make an issue out of it "now that the way has been found," and noted that EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn had also spoken about it.

The Nice Treaty says that the EU can consist of not more than 27 member states. This number would be achieved with the admission of Bulgaria and Romania as the first next candidates for EU membership.
