SARAJEVO, March 23 (Hina) - The head of the Croatian Council for the Protection of Market Competition, Olgica Spevec, and her Bosnian counterpart Sena Hatibovic signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation in the domain of market competition in Sarajevo on Thursday.

The memorandum identified the need to develop bilateral relations between the two councils so as to ensure conditions for effective markets, products and services in accordance with market competition rules.

Speaking to reporters after the signing ceremony, Spevec said that the main purpose of cooperation in this area was to lift barriers standing in the way of free market competition and to prevent monopolies.

Unlike Bosnia-Herzegovina, which established the Market Competition Council only last year, Croatia's Agency for the Protection of Market Competition has been active for 10 years now.

Spevec said that Croatia was ready to assist Bosnia-Herzegovina based on its experience, and that cooperation in this area was also an obligation arising from efforts to join the European Union.

"This will also be an integral part of a new agreement on the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA), and according to my information, talks on it should start next month in Bucharest," she said.

Hatibovic thanked Croatia for its assistance in this field, saying that Bosnia-Herzegovina was interested in close cooperation with Croatia, including exchanges of experience and relevant documents and training.

After Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina is the second country to sign such a memorandum with Croatia.
