ZAGREB, March 6 (Hina) - The chair of the Croatian parliamentary committee on information, information systems and the media, Zeljka Antunovic, and the chair of the French government's commission for computer science and freedoms, Alex Turk, met in Zagreb on Monday to address Croatian-French cooperation in the Twinning Project.

Also attending the meeting which addressed issues related to protection of personal data were French Ambassador Francois Saint-Paul, the chief of control at the French government's commission, Florence Fouretes, Twinning Project chief for Croatia Claude Touzain, and the French government's advisor in the project, Pascal Raymond, the Croatian parliament said in a press release.

Antunovic recalled that Croatia's Agency for the Protection of Personal Data had been active for nearly two years and said that France's experience and recommendations were welcome.

Turk said bilateral cooperation in the project was developing well and announced for mid-May a new meeting in Paris with the director of the Agency for the Supervision of Personal Data.

He added that protection of personal data was a fundamental right of every individual and should be treated as all other human rights.

Turk said that Croatia should make sure that its Agency for the Protection of Personal Data was independent of the Interior Ministry, pass laws on databases, regulate access to databases, and establish cooperation between the Agency and state bodies.

The Twinning Project is aimed at helping European Union accession candidates develop modern and effective administrations necessary for the application of the EU's legal standards.
