Croats more optimistic in February, finds survey

ZAGREB, March 4(Hina) - Public optimism in February was higher than inJanuary, stopping a declining trend which began last November,according to an optimism index which the Hendal agency based on asurvey among 400 persons from all over Croatia during February.
ZAGREB, March 4(Hina) - Public optimism in February was higher than in January, stopping a declining trend which began last November, according to an optimism index which the Hendal agency based on a survey among 400 persons from all over Croatia during February.

The survey found that Croatia's optimism index in February was 45.5 points, up 3.6 points from the month before and up 1.5 points from February 2005.

As in previous months, the public was least satisfied with the general economic situation, as shown by the value of the subindex covering this area which, although 22.8 points, was still 0.7 points higher than in January.

The value of the subindex covering satisfaction with the current quality of living was 44.9 points, up 0.5 points from January.

Members of the public were also more optimistic in estimating the economic situation over the next six months. The value of the subindex covering this area was 47.9 points, up 2.5 points from January.

The public was also more optimistic regarding the quality of life in the next six months. The value of this subindex was 57 points, up 6.1 points from January.

In February the people were more optimistic also regarding their financial situation over the next six months, with the subindex standing at 54.7 points, up from the 49.7 points in January.

The optimism index is measured on a scale from zero, denoting utter pessimism, to 100, denoting utter optimism. It is based on six subindexes which cover current satisfaction with the economy and quality of life and estimate trends in the economy, personal finances and quality of living. The index is based on the U.S. Optimism Index.

The optimism index was first measured in Croatia in September 2003. It was the highest in December of that year, standing at 50.1 points, and the lowest last August, when it stood at 38.6 points.
