"We think Europe is ripe for a new Westphalian Peace, which (was signed) in 1648 after years of war in Europe. There are two very important messages in it: religious and political tolerance. We think that these messages may have been forgotten, that they have to be renewed and that the new Westphalian Peace should declare Islam and Judaism European religions like Catholicism and Lutheran and Calvinist Protestantism," said Ceric.
He also spoke of his draft Declaration of European Muslims, which he will present in Zagreb tomorrow.
"The declaration has many messages... but I would highlight two. One is a message to the European Union, that it is time to institutionalise Islam in Europe, and the other message is to the Muslims, to define their European goal."
Ceric said the second message was not explicitly stated in the declaration but would be so in an annex.
Ceric today also met the head of the Catholic Church in Croatia and the Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, saying they were agreed that "dialogue has no alternative".
"We think that, particularly in Europe, all churches (and) religious communities should invest more effort in assuring all Europeans that it is possible to live in Europe in religious and any other form of tolerance."
Ceric said he had given Bozanic a copy of his draft declaration and expected a comment.
The declaration was drafted last year and presented for the first time at an Islamic Forum of Europe conference in London in August 2005.
