ZAGREB, Feb 17 (Hina) - The Office of the UN High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) in Croatia welcomes the agreement between the Ministry of the
Interior and the authorities of Kutina, a town about 80 kilometres east of
Zagreb, to set up a shelter for asylum seekers in Kutina on a temporary
basis. Interior Minister Ivica Kirin and Kutina mayor Davor Zmegac
on February 10 reached an agreement to set up a temporary shelter for asylum
seekers that would be closed by 31 December 2008. After that date, asylum
seekers will be accommodated in a shelter to be permanently set up in the area
of Zagreb.
Croatia is required to open a shelter for asylum seekers in conformity
with its law on asylum seekers and its obligations towards the European Union,
the Office said in a statement signed by UNHCR representative Jean Claude
Concolato.
