ZAGREB, Feb 14 (Hina) - Croatia plans to open a temporary shelter
for asylum seekers in Kutina, about 80 kilometres east of Zagreb, while Zagreb
is seen as the best location for a permanent shelter because of lower costs,
the Ministry of the Interior said on Tuesday. Under an agreement
reached between the Ministry of the Interior and the Kutina authorities, a
shelter for asylum seekers will be set up in Kutina on a temporary basis and
will be closed by 31 December 2008. Any extension of the deadline would not be
possible without the approval of the Kutina Town Council.
Croatia is required to open a shelter for asylum seekers in conformity
with its obligations towards the European Union. When the country joins the
bloc, its borders will become the outer borders of the EU.
