ZAGREB, Feb 16 (Hina) - Croatia had detected bovine spongiform
encephalopathy (BSE) in a dead heifer, in the country's first case of mad cow
disease, Croatian Agriculture Minister Petar Cobankovic said at an urgent news
conference on Thursday evening. Cobankovic said that test ran by the
Zagreb Veterinary Institute pointed to mad cow disease, adding that brain
samples from the five-year old heifer had been sent to the Weybridge laboratory
in Britain for definite confirmation. The results are expected on Tuesday or
Wednesday.
The heifer was born on a private farm in eastern Croatia of Austrian
parents, state television reported earlier this evening and the minister
confirmed.
