Grabar-Kitarovic told Hina after the meeting that she had told McCain that Croatia would accept any negotiated settlement reached by the parties concerned.
"Our fundamental interest is to preserve the peace and stability in Southeastern Europe and we will make our contribution to that effect working with the United States and the international community," the minister said.
She thanked the senator for his support for two resolutions in which the US Congress had recently recommended admitting Croatia to NATO as soon as possible, and asked for his further support.
Grabar-Kitarovic is currently on a five-day visit to Washington.
Also on Wednesday she met representatives of the American Jewish Committee. Her talks with Committee Chairman Robert Goodkind focused, among other things, on the restitution of nationalised Jewish property in Croatia.
The minister said that Croatian President Stjepan Mesic and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader had announced that the Denationalisation Act would be amended, and added that ways were being considered of correcting injustices done to people who had not been compensated for or whose cases were not included in any of the already signed bilateral treaties.
During her stay in the US, Grabar-Kitarovic gave an interview to CNN.
