ZAGREB, Feb 9 (Hina) - Almost one third of payments given to
employees in Croatia is paid under the counter, so that both the employer and
employee can evade paying taxes and contributions, according to an opinion poll
which was conducted by the MojPosao.net portal together with the Croatian
Employers' Association (HUP) and the Selectio consulting firm, The
survey was conducted on 500 workers and about 300 employers in January.
Emphasis was placed on experiences, opinions and views of respondents,
and the results are not exactly measured data but this is more about the
opinions on the informal economy, the survey's authors have said.
Thus, employees believe that about 32 percent of payments to a worker
goes through informal channels, i.e. illegally, while employers put it at 31
percent.
According to the respondents, the informal economy is widespread in
retail sale, construction, architecture, tourism and the restaurant and cafe
businesses.
