SARAJEVO, Feb 8 (Hina) - Said Omer, a naturalised citizen of Bosnia-Herzegovina, has been arrested in Sarajevo to be deported to Morocco as his country of origin, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to his wife Semra Hadzic, Said Omer was arrested by members of the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) on Wednesday morning and transferred to Sarajevo airport for deportation.

SIPA did not confirm the information.

Said Omer, born in Tangier, is suspected by the Bosnian authorities of illegally acquiring Bosnian citizenship by forging his personal documents.

He was already deported from Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2002 after he was arrested with several members of the so-called Algerian Group on suspicion of preparing terrorist attacks on the British and US embassies in Sarajevo.

Most of the naturalised Bosnian citizens originating from Islamic countries who were handed over to US authorities at the time ended up in the US-run detention centre at Guantanamo, Cuba, while Said Omer was expelled to France. He later returned to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The Bosnian authorities have launched a massive campaign to verify the status of persons originating from African and Asian countries, who acquired Bosnian citizenship during or immediately after the 1992-1995 war, and check them for possible links to terrorist activities.
